From an internship to a marketing placement – 7 things life at JKH has taught me!

By Lasanthi Ladduwahetty

People decide to take up an internship for a variety of reasons: it might be for a degree requirement, or it is simply the next step in life, or your parents expect it of you, or you want to make the most out of life and etc. Whatever the reason …. your first internship experience is sure to be different for everyone. Here’s a glimpse of mine and the lessons it taught me in 7 brief pointers 🙂

Career choice is a tough decision to make. I’m sure we can all agree that an internship can really help you make a more informed decision and potentially secure a graduate position at the end of the internship.

Just as overwhelmed with the ever so competitive corporate world I started off my career right after my degree in Business and IT at JKH; Sri Lanka’s largest conglomerate!!!

I wouldn’t know how work life is elsewhere given that JKH is my first
corporate life experience but what I do know is that I love life at JKH and I’m so grateful to be a part of the JKH family 🙂

#The.A.Team

We spend technically 8 hours a day a minimum at work, therefore, it’s important to have fun and to enjoy your time at work while of course not neglecting your work 🙂

Work life makes you grow, and you learn more about yourself every day. We get to create an experience of a lifetime whilst enjoying what you do and being you!

At number ONE is that most importantly a Great Company = Great friends!

At number TWO – Make the most of your strengths.

We all have our flaws but if you are accustomed to JKH culture by now you know that we are all about Team Work 🙂 In doing so we can give our strengths a greater magnitude and dilute one another’s weaknesses!

THIRDLY its entirely “Over to you” – it’s up to you to make the most of the opportunities that you are given. JKH offers numerous chances that will help shape you and grow into a better person and there’s lots you can learn.

The recently concluded SAP event which was a major success…. I must proudly add, taught me two important things about a successful tech event. One is how important it is to plan and prepare well ahead which gives you room for unfortunate surprises and to get the target group into one room. It’s all about the quality of the people, the smartest person in the room is the room itself!

Like any other graduate who has an interest in the world of business and wants to know how to get ahead of the game? And How do you get your “foot at the door” – whichever way you want to “term” it …. at number FOUR I learnt that background research or commonly known as “Doing your homework” is paramount! – Let it be a presentation to your colleagues or to a potential client or at an open forum discussion seeing the efforts the team puts to present or to rather “market” a customized solution or an idea is not only important in stepping up your end of the game but also to make a lasting impression.

Building confidence and perseverance is the Fifth lesson I’ve learnt. Good preparation and continuing with endurance and flexibility, are critical factors in surviving in the corporate world.

#VolunteeringAtJKH#CSR

Being a socially responsible citizen is extremely important. JKH gives all its employees the opportunity to be a part of their CSR initiatives that are for greater good. The projects vary from Health, Education, Arts & culture etc and has truly taught me the importance of giving back to the society in which ever way you can. And this is my SIXTH
lesson.

Well last but definitely not least ….

At number SEVEN – It’s not about Standing out from the crowd, it’s about standing tall and broad together!
